🗓️ Duration: March 2024 - July 2024 (5 Months)
🗺️ Location: Super Fab Lab, Kerala Startup Mission, Kochi
🗺️ Role: Fab Academy Student
Volunteering at Super Fab Lab Kochi , under the Kerala Startup Mission , has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my journey as a mechatronics engineer and maker. As a Technical Guide Volunteer , I had the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between advanced digital fabrication technologies and curious minds visiting the lab—from school students to engineering faculty.
🧭 My Role as a Technical Guide
Regularly volunteered at Super Fab Lab Kochi, part of the Kerala Startup Mission, where I provided in-depth explanations of additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques and machines.
Covered key machines and processes, including: Molding and Casting Techniques, 3D Scanning, Formlabs SLA 3D Printers, Stratasys Systems, PRUSA i3 MK3s, OMAX Waterjet Cutter, TRAK DPM RX2 CNC Mill, and Zund Digital Cutter.
Engaged with students and faculty during industrial visits, sharing insights on various fabrication methods, workflows, and real-world applications. These sessions often became interactive knowledge exchanges, where curiosity met experience and creativity sparked new ideas.
👥 Interacting with Students & Faculty
During industrial visits , I engaged directly with groups of students and faculty, tailoring my sessions to suit their academic backgrounds and curiosity levels. From sparking awe in young minds seeing a 3D printer in action for the first time to deep-diving into technical questions from mechanical engineering professors—every session brought something new to the table.
🛠️ Sharing Knowledge on Additive & Subtractive Manufacturing
My core responsibility involved explaining both additive and subtractive manufacturing processes in detail. I walked visitors through the theory, working principles, and real-world applications of a wide range of machines and techniques:
Subtractive Manufacturing:
🟠 Zund Digital Cutter : Demonstrated how precision cutting can be achieved on soft materials like cardboard and fabric using a high-speed oscillating blade.
🔵 TRAK DPM RX2 CNC Bed Mill : Explained its role in metal machining, highlighting the G-code workflow from CAD to CAM.
💧 OMAX Waterjet Cutter : Showcased high-pressure water and abrasive cutting for complex materials like steel and acrylic.
Additive Manufacturing:
🔷 Stratasys Systems : Discussed industrial-grade polymer printing and support material removal.
🌐 Formlabs SLA Printers : Talked about stereolithography, resin curing, and post-processing steps.
🔶 PRUSA i3 MK3s : Illustrated FDM 3D printing, showing real-time printing and filament usage.
Other Techniques:
🔍 3D Scanning : Demonstrated how physical objects can be digitized and edited for reverse engineering or replication.
🧪 Molding & Casting : Introduced students to silicone molds, resin casting, and their industrial significance.
